Western Intercollegiate: Arizona, Taehoon Song of Washington lead after round one

After one round of the 77th Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, Calif., Arizona and
Taehoon Song of Washington lead the respective competitions.
Arizona shot 2-under to lead the team competition by six shots. The Wildcats were the only team to shoot under par, carding a team round of 2-under 348 to go up on the field. Stanford is in solo second place at 4-over.
Washington is in solo third place at 5-over, and California and Oregon are T4 at 6-over. Chattanooga and host school San Jose State are T6 at 8-over and BYU is in solo eighth place at 9-over.
Pepperdine has won the team title two of the last three years but is in solo eleventh place at 20-over after the opening 18 holes.
In the individual competition, Taehoon Song of Washington shot a 4-under 66 after making six birdies and two bogeys. Song started on hole No. 1, making a bogey, but recovered on holes No. 4, 6, and 8 to make the turn at 2-under.
He finished his round with birdies on Nos. 15, 16, and 18 to reach the clubhouse at 4-under. Song is currently ranked No. 182 in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings.
Petr Hruby of Washington, Sam Sommerhauser of Arizona, and Nathan Petronzio of Texas are all T2 at 3-under and one shot back of Song.
Seven golfers are T5 at 2-under, and 15 golfers are under par and within three shots of the lead.
Michael Thorbjornsen of Stanford, the No. 2 ranked golfer in the Golfweek/AmateurGolf.com World Rankings, is T12 at 1-under.
Pasatiempo, designed by Alister Mackenzie, has long been a member of Golf Digest's Top 100 courses list. Mackenzie also designed the famed Cypress Point and Augusta National Golf Clubs. On October 5, 2010, it was the host course of the 2010 Stocker Cup Qualifier.
