JACKSONVILLE, FL (May 7, 2017) - On the strength of a second consecutive 2-under 70's Jack Hall was able to finish even-par and as the five shot winner of the Timuquana Cup Senior. Hall was finally able to break through and win the title after finishing as the runner-up each of the last two years.
On Saturday Hall moved into the lead at Timuquana Country Club before pulling away with a five birdie, three bogey final round. The last day birdies for Hall came on Nos. 3, 5, 6, 14 and 15.
The victory for Hall was his first AmateurGolf.com Ranking event title of the year but it was already his fifth top-10 finish.
Two-time defending champion Doug Hanzel was the runner-up at 5-over while David Anthony, Mike Bodney and Mike Vallencourt shared third at 10-over.
SUPER SENIOR DIVISION
In the Super Senior Division Rob Hess won the title in comeback fashion. Starting the day one back, Hess came roaring out of the gates with a bogey-free 4-under 32 on the front nine to take a lead that he would never relinquish. During the torrid front nine Hess birdied the 3rd, 4th, 6th and 9th holes on his way to a 2-over finish and a four shot victory.
Hess did bogey twice on the back nine but he had provided more then enough cushion with his play over the first nine holes.
On Sunday Hess was able to overtake defending champion and tournament host Steve Melnyk who finished second at 6-over and in third it was the 15-over Jim Carley.
SECOND ROUND RECAP
With a 2-under 70 Jack Hall moved to 2-over and the top of the Timuquana Cup Senior leaderboard. Hall will begin the final round at the Timuquana Country Club one shot in front of two-time defending champion Doug Hanzel.
Hall, who has four top-10 AmateurGolf.com Ranking event finishes already this year, was even-par after nine holes before turing in a bogey-free 2-under 34 on the second nine. The back nine birdies for Hall came on Nos. 12 and 14.
On Sunday Hall will be looking to break into the winners circle for the first time at the Timuquana Cup Senior after finishing as the runner-up each of the last two years.
The man beating out Hall each of the last two years, Doug Hanzel, will start the final round 3-over and one shot off the pace. Hanzel stumbled to a 4-over 40 on the front nine but rebounding on the way home with three birdies in his last five holes.
David Anthony is 7-over and in third while Bill Hardaker, Jim Pearson and first round leader Mike Vallencourt are sharing fourth at 8-over.
SUPER SENIOR DIVISION
Steve Melnyk continues to lead the charge in the Super Senior Division but things have tightened up. After leading by four shots after the first round, Melnyk is now ahead by just one.
Sitting at 3-over Melnyk, the tournament host, has combined rounds of 71-76 thus far.
Robert Hess is in second place at 4-over with Fred Peel in a distant third at 10-over.
ROUND ONE RECAP
After a first round 1-over 73 Mike Vallencourt is the day one leader of the Timuquana Cup Senior hosted by Timuquana Country Club.
Vallencourt started his round with consecutive bogeys, the first of his four, before bouncing back to play 1-under golf the rest of the way. The first round birdies for Vallencourt came on Nos. 6, 11 and 16.
Two-time defending champion Doug Hanzel is right in the mix as well and he will begin play on Saturday 2-over just one off the pace. Hanzel, unable to find a birdie on Friday, bogeyed twice.
Mike Bodney is third at 3-over, Jack Hall was fourth at 4-over while in fifth at 5-over it was Jim Pearson and Mark Weston.
SUPER SENIOR DIVISION
Tournament host Steve Melnyk and defending Super Senior Champion is at it again. Melnyk shot Friday 1-under to take a four shot lead with two rounds still to play.
For Melnyk his scoring began in the form of a hole-in-one on the 8th hole and it continued with 12th hole and 16th hole birdies. The round was not without its mishaps however as Melnyk double-bogeyed the 11th and bogeyed the 15th.
Rob Hess is in second place at 3-over and in third place it is Fred Peel at 7-over.

of amateur golf.

USGA Rules Official Tom Dudley will be in
charge of course set up and the rules of
competition. One of the highlights of this
year's event will be a cocktail cruise on the
St.
Johns River departing from the Timuquana
Country Club dock and housing will be
available
for many competitors in members' homes.
