The Best Tournament Logos in Amateur Golf

The logo for the Gasparilla Invitational might be the best in amateur golf
Every tournament logo has a story, and there are many good stories out there in the amateur golf world. Here are eight of our favorites:
The logo for the
Gasparilla Invitational is a play on the skull and crossbones of pirate lore, as the tournament is just one of many events taking place during Gasparilla Season in Tampa which honors the legend of the mythical Spanish pirate José Gaspar. Nicknamed "Gasparilla", the pirate was said to have been based in Southwest Florida in late 18th and early 19th centuries.
The logo for the
African Amateur Stroke Play features the dotted outline of the continent of Africa sitting on a golf tee, and incorporates the colors of the South African flag (red, white and blue from the colors of the Boer Republics; yellow, black and green from the African National Congress) where the tournament is held.
Darius Rucker was born in Charleston, S.C., and his band Hootie and the Blowfish sponsors a college tournament (with concerts held during tournament week) at nearby Bulls Bay Golf Club. The logo for
Hootie at Bulls Bay takes the shape of an acoustic guitar and incorporates the bull skull and horns of Bulls Bay.
The Sanctuary Golf Course in New Lenox, Ill. sits near Interstate 80 just south of Chicago, and the logo for the
I-80 Amateur takes the Interstate 80 sign and personalizes it to the course, city and tournament. The
H2 Invitational in Hawaii has a logo with a similar concept, as it is held at two courses along Interstate H2 (how is there an Interstate in Hawaii?).
The famous Las Vegas welcome sign is reflected in the logo for the
Rebel Beach Intercollegiate, a women's college tournament hosted by UNLV (Rebel) and Long Beach State (Beach). The
Las Vegas World Amateur and the
Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown have logos with a similar theme.
The logo for the
Lee County Amateur is simple but elegant -- it depicts the outline of Lee County, North Carolina, which is located in the Sandhills region just northeast of Pinehurst. The cone of the longleaf pine tree, which dominates the region, is teed up inside the outline. Other county amateurs have tried the same logo concept, but Lee County's is the best.
The
Southwestern Amateur has had the same logo for decades, and it's a classic: the pants, the sombrero, the mustache, and a laid-back desert vibe. When you see this guy on the tee you don't know if he's here to caddy or to hustle you out of your money.
The
Egg Invitational, which we featured in an article about
tournaments with weird names, has a logo with an ostrich poking his head out of an egg (are those dimples on the egg shell?). Why an ostrich? Because of the vast amount of sand at the host Mayfield Sand Ridge Club in Ohio.
