Rose Zhang led top-ranked Stanford to a 10-shot victory at the Stanford Intercollegiate which wrapped up on Sunday on The Farm.
Wearing "Play for Her" pink shirts commemorating Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Cardinal began the day with a seven-shot lead over San Jose State and stretched the margin of victory to 10 over the Spartans and Iowa State with a solid 4-under 280 on a sunny but crisp Sunday in the Bay Area.
Texas (-1) was the only other team in the field that managed to finish in red numbers.
Zhang won her second consecutive Stanford Intercollegiate in impressive wire-to-wire fashion. Beginning the day with a comfortable seven-stroke lead, Zhang finished off her sixth collegiate victory with a final round 69 to finish at 13-under 200, which was good for a seven-stroke victory over
Anna Backman of Miami, Fla. and
Antonia Malate of San Jose State.
Rose Zhang Three golfers finished at 5-under 208, including Georgia's
Jenny Bae, who turned in the low round of the day with a 5-under 66 to move 13 spots up the leaderboard into a tie for fourth.
Starting on the 12th hole, Bae birdied five of her first six holes and got it to 7-under on the day with two more birdies on hole Nos. 8 and 11. Her only hiccup of the day came on the tricky par 4 ninth (her 16th) where she made a double bogey.
Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn of Iowa State and Angela Heo of Texas were also part of the pack to finish at 5-under. The Cyclones more than held their own in a field that featured seven teams listed inside the Golfweek/Sagarin Top-25 rankings.
Zhang began her round with an uncharacteristic bogey on Stanford Golf Course's inviting par-5 first but she quickly righted her ship with a birdie on the second. She moved to 3-under on the day with birdies on holes Nos. 7, 10 and 13 and cruised home with a 2-under round of 69.
Zhang, the top-ranked female amateur in the world, carried the Cardinal all weekend. The only other Stanford player who managed to finish under par was junior
Sadie Englemann, who shot a 4-under 67 on Friday en route to finishing tied for 13th place at 1-under 212. Senior
Brooke Seay finished with a 3-under 68, her best round of the season to date while
Rachel Heck closed with a 1-under 70
Stanford will close out its fall schedule at the Pac-12 Preview which gets underway on Oct. 31.
