Frank Vana (Boxford, Mass.) and Rusty Strawn (McDonough, Ga.) shot 69 and 70 respectively to share the 36-hole lead at the Society of Seniors (SOS) Ralph Bogart Championship at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.
After a first round in which no one came close to breaking par (the low score was 2-over 74), scoring was better in round two, with six par-or-batter rounds in the Championship division.
Vana opened with a 5-over 77 and was 3 over through seven holes of his second round, but reeled off six birdies in the last ten holes to go from +8 to +2 for the tournament. His 69 was the best round of the tournament so far.
The two are one shot ahead of a trio of players including Ken Kinkopf (Jupiter, Fla.), a three-time SOS winner in 2019, as well as Keith Decker (Martinsville, Va.) and Brian Keenan (Tampa, Fla.).
Kinkopf shot a 70 and with a high finish will have a chance to close the gap on Doug Hanzel (Savannah, Ga.) in the AmateurGolf.com Senior Player-of-the-Year points race. Hanzel and Kinkopf have been 1-2 for most of the latter half of the year.
Hanzel is another shot back, tied for sixth with Allen Peake (Macon, Ga.) and Mark Knecht (Paducah, Ky.). With the next player another four shots back, one of the top eight players will likely be the champion, and the final round is setting up to be a shootout.
In the Super Senior division, Stephen Fox (Barboursville, W.V.), holds a one-shot lead over Jerry McMullen (Carmel, Ind.) and Mark Weston (Windermere, Fla.), with a group of four players another shot back. In all, ten players are within three shots of the lead.
In the Grand Master division, Jack Ramsey (Germantown, Tenn.) has a three-shot lead over Don Donatoni (Avalon, N.J.).
