We expected big things for the 20th annual playing of the Two Man Links Championship at Bandon Dunes. But we wouldn't have called a 10-under 62. It's hard to see rounds like those coming.

The Georgia duo of Scott Pitts and Tim Lovell really "enjoyed the walk" today at Bandon Dunes -- which less than a year ago hosted the U.S. Amateur -- posting a tournament record round of 62 that is good for a 5-shot lead in the 72-hole tournament.

It's a long week, but Pitts and Lovell made it clear that they can make birdies -- and plenty of them.

After a bogey on No. 1 (which was saved by his partner's par) Scott Pitts made birdies on Nos. 3, 4, 6 and 9 to take the team to 4-under, and he was just getting started.

After his partner Lovell birdied one of the toughest holes on the course (No. 11) Pitts went red again, birdieing 13, 14, and 15, taking a brief pause on No. 16 with a par, and then closing with birdies on the tricky 17th and par-5 18th.

It's not an individual game, but Pitts fired 65 on his own ball, which would lead the gross division on it's own.

Pitts and Lovell are trailed by two teams at 5-under. Jason and Jack Anthony from the San Francisco Bay Area posted a solid 67 at Bandon Dunes. Jason, the son in the pair, is a veteran of multiple USGA events and a recent champion of the San Francisco City Championship -- a Northern California "major." Charles and Mason Mazzola also posted 67 at Bandon Dunes.

And talk about career rounds -- at 4-under gross is the father/son pair of Andrew and Simon Zacks, who played Pacific Dunes. And get this -- Simon is a 5-handicap who has never broken 70, until today that is. His 69 was met with more than his usual grin walking off the green. And deservedly so. The Oregon Duck senior made five birdies on the front nine, and eight pars and one bogey on the back.

In the Net Competition, the team of Joe and Joseph Kowalski from the Phoenix/Scottsdale area lit it up with a 13-under 58 at Pacific Dunes, to take a 3-shot lead over Andrew and Simon Zacks (10-under net).

"I shot 50 on the back nine yesterday in my practice round," joked the elder Kowalski, beaming after making four gross birdies and shooting and 84 on the day.

With a full field of 80 golfers, the 20th Two Man Links Championship is looking like one of the best-ever. But mother nature may have plans for us later this week, as the Oregon Coast looks to be getting a little more rugged starting Saturday for the second round.
