Playoff win for Canavan at San Diego County Am
Below: Sr Champ Jim Seymour w/ Net Winner Frank Borges
FALLBROOK, Calif. (July 20, 2010) -- It took two extra holes to determine the final outcome of this year's San Diego County Amateur, as recent Granada High School (Northridge) grad Sam Yi tied University of the Redlands graduate Ross Canavan of Palm Desert at 1-under 143 for the 36 hole event at the Golf Club of California.
The course, which has seen a resurgence after suffering with the real estate economy several years ago, was in perfect shape and players generally took advantage of the scoring opportunities that came from relatively soft greens and benign wind conditions. Yi posted 73-70 and waited in the clubhouse while Canavan, the round one leader at 3-under 69 negotiated a tough two putt on the final hole to shoot 74 and get a spot in the playoff.
The 18th hole at The Golf Club of California is a par three over a pond which makes for a dramatic finish with the gorgeous Spanish style clubhouse in the background. Yi missed the green left, in a closely mown area pin high, and Canavan hit a stinger of a four iron to 18 feet, giving him a good look at birdie. After Yi hit a nice chip, Canavan nearly made the birdie putt for the win. Yi holed a solid five footer and the players moved on to the par five 10th.
Playing downwind, both of them cleared the dry creek in front of the green, but Yi's ball (which he thought had found the bunker) bounded left into the desert-like hazard. Electing to play out rather than drop, he hit a spectacular shot to ten feet and nearly holed the birdie putt. Canavan, who hit a deft pitch off a tight lie to four feet, calmly knocked it in for the victory.
Yi will take a year off to focus on competitive golf at the amateur level, while Canavan, already sporting a white Titleist staff bag, is on his way towards a professional career.
In the Senior Division, Jim Seymour of Bakersfield took the title by two strokes over Mel Collins of Long Beach. Seymour posted a pair of 74's while Collins shot 78-72.
Frank Borges overtook Vince Steele for the Net title. The seven handicapper was tough to beat on Tuesday, posting a gross 75 for a Net of 68.
