Shane Muldowney shot a final-round 2-under 70 -- the only under-par round all weekend -- to squeak out a one-shot win at the AmateurGolf.com San Diego Amateur at Aviara Golf Club.
For the Carlsbad native and UC Davis sophomore, it was in Saturday's first round where everything turned around. Muldowney was 6 over par through 11 holes, but a mid-round adjustment on the greens turned his fortunes around, and he went six under the rest of the way.
"I found something with my putting and everything just clicked," said Muldowney.
His first AGC tournament win came with a curling par putt on the final hole, and he later thanked his father who was on the bag for the weekend.
The first-round leader Jake Elliott (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) didn't do much wrong on Sunday, going 1 under on the front nine and playing the first 35 holes in even par. But an untimely bogey on the difficult par-4 18th left him solo second, one shot behind Muldowney, after a 73.
The two were far ahead of everyone else -- seven shots in fact -- with Daniel Nunez (Los Angeles, Calif.) leading the rest of the field. Jerry Ledzinski II (Carmel, Calif.) finished fourth overall and won the prize for the low mid-amateur.
There was a 45-minute frost delay on Sunday, but it warmed up and turned into a beautiful Southern California winter day, as the pictures show.

In the Senior Division, Jim Ream (Cerritos, Calif.) held on for a one-shot win over Jeff Britton (Carmel, Calif.), who in a scheduling quirk was trying to win his second San Diego Amateur of 2019. Britton won the tournament when it was held in January, and took the lead after shooting 1 under on his first nine holes. But Ream rebounded two of his last six holes, including the par-5 17th right after Britton made bogey there, to secure the win.
Ream finished at 5-over 149, with Britton 6 over. Todd Palmaer finished third, three shots behind Ream.
In the Women's Division, Marie Dean (Davis, Calif.) of Cal State L.A. closed with a 75 to pull into a tie with Jaime Jacob (Encinitas, Calif.) of Cal San Marcos, and was awarded the trophy after a scorecard playoff. The silver lining for Jacob is that she already has a trophy with "2019 San Diego Amateur Women's Champion", as she was the winner when the tournament was played last January!

Michael Massery (Del Mar, Calif.), a member of the Torrey Pines Men's Club along with the Tournament Host and AGC Founder Pete Wlodkowski, was visibly disappointed as he sat at the scorer's table, after struggling in his final round. But once he looked at the scoreboard, his mood brightened as he realized that he had still won the Net Division, quite handily as it turned out, with a 3-over total. Cody Lerum and James Grieves tied for second.
As usual, Aviara Golf Club was a true championship test, yielding few low scores and validating itself as the host of the LPGA Tour's Kia Classic. Congratulations to all of the champions this weekend, and thanks to all for playing.

DIVISIONS
CHAMPIONSHIP
For players aged 16 and over who have a
USGA or
equivalent index of less than 5.5
SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
For players age 50 and over (as of the
tournament
date) with a handicap index of less than 8.0.
Note:
Must be 55 and over for NCGA Senior Points.
NET
For players 16 and over with handicap
between 5.5
and 18.0.
MID-AM (subdivision of Championship)
For players age
25-
49. Compete alongside the younger players in
the
Championship Division, (same tees, same
prize
opportunities) and if there are at least six Mid-
Ams,
a
separate prize and trophy will be awarded.
SUPER SENIORS (subdivision of Senior)
For players age
65+. Compete alongside the younger senior
players

the
Senior Division, (same tees, same prize
opportunities) and if there are at least six
players 65

over, a
separate prize and trophy will be awarded for
low
super senior.
WOMEN (subdivision of Championship)
Will play in the
Championship
Division but
from a shorter tee. If there are at least six
women in
the field, a separate prize and trophy will be
awarded.
