The 42nd U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Scarborough, N.Y., and Fenway Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y., is underway.

The two rounds of stroke play will take place on Saturday, September 9th, and Sunday, September 10th, and then the match play portion will take place at Sleepy Hollow Country Club.

Sleepy Hollow was opened in 1913 and designed by Charles Blair Macdonald with an expansion by A.W. Tillinghast in 1920 with recent restoration by Gil Hanse and George Bahto. Fenway Golf Club was opened in 1920 and designed by A.W. Tillinghast, with a recent restoration by Gil Hanse.

Sleepy Hollow will play 6,840 yards and is a Par 71, while Fenway Golf Club will play 6,657 yards and is a Par 70 (Subject to Change).

The 2023 championship accepted a record amount of entries, accepting 6,060 this year. The previous record was 5,708, which was set last year.

LAST YEARS CHAMPIONSHIP

Matthew McClean of the Republic of Ireland, defeated fellow countryman Hugh Foley, 3 and 1, in the 36-hole championship match at Erin Hills in Erin, Wis. It was the first-ever U.S. Mid-Amateur final between international players, and McClean became the second foreign-born champion, joining 2019 titlist Lukas Michel. McClean and Foley spent the entire week together, including sharing private housing.

ABOUT THE U.S. Mid-Amateur

The U.S. Mid-Amateur originated in 1981 for the amateur golfer of at least 25 years of age, the purpose of which to provide a formal national championship for the post-college player. 264 players begin the championship with two rounds of sroke play qualifying held at two courses, after which the low 64 (with a playoff if necessary to get the exact number) advance to single elimination match play.
