The weather has been a major factor in many amateur golf events so far this season, and the 2023 Olympia Fields Fighting Illini Invitational was no exception.
The normally three-round tournament was shortened to two rounds after the final round was canceled due to "unplayable conditions and continuing rainfall", according to the tournament organizers.
North Carolina won the team competition at 10-under, six shots clear of the second-place finisher Kansas at 4-under.
Georgia Tech finished in solo third place at 3-under, Arizona State finished in fourth place at even par, and Alabama finished in fifth place at 1-over.
North Carolina sent three of their players to Scotland earlier in the month to represent the United States for the 49th Walker Cup.
Dylan Menante,
David Ford, and
Austin Greaser represented the Tar Heels in the prestigious event.
North Carolina's 36-hole total of 550 also broke the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational's 36-hole record of 551 set by Oklahoma State in 2018 and Stanford in 2022. The 2018 Oklahoma State lineup was a pretty stacked one, including Viktor Hovland, Matthew Wolff, and Austin Eckroat.
In individual competition,
Christo Lamprecht of Georgia Tech finished 9-under to win by one shot over
Maxwell Ford, who shot 8-under to finish in solo second place.
Christo Lamprecht
Lamprecht a first-round 5-under 65 and a second-round 4-under 66 to finish at 9-under and win the tournament.
Lamprecht is coming off an impressive summer, where he finished as the low amateur at the Open Championship and winning the British Amateur.
