California State Fair: Matthew Sutherland holds comfortable lead after second round

Matthew Sutherland of Carmichael, Calif., holds a three-shot lead heading into the final round of the 2023 California State Fair Men's Championship.
The rising senior at Fresno State University is coming off a round of 16 finish at the 123rd U.S. Amateur at Cherry Hills, Colo., and has played solid golf all summer.
Sutherland shot a first-round 5-under 67 and a second-round 8-under 64 to sit at 13-under.
Sutherland was 4-under through his first four holes in the second round, making two birdies on Holes No. 2 and 3 and eagling No. 4.
Carlos Astiazaran of Tucson, Ariz., is in solo second place at 10-under and Nick Woo of Novato, Calif., is in solo third place at 9-under.
Sutherland was the medalist at his U.S. Amateur qualifying, leading to a round of 16 appearance. He also won the Sacramento City Championship and the Sacramento Country Amateur. He finished T3 at the Memorial Amateur.

The State Fair Men's Amateur Championship is one of
the oldest and most prestigious Amateur
Championships in the West. The Championship is
limited to 108 players. Competition commences over a
54-hole stroke play format with 18 holes played each
day. The field is cut after 36 holes to the low 36
players & ties.
