Arizona Wildcat transfer Jordan Gumberg leads at Southwestern
Jordan Gumberg
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Jordan Gumberg, who will join the University of Arizona men's team for the 2015-2016 season, posted 30 on the back nine at The Desert Mountain Club's Cochise Course to post 64 on day one. He leads the 100th playing of the Southwestern Amateur by a stroke over Dawson Armstrong.
Gumberg, a native of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., played his first collegiate year at the University of Tennessee but transferred to Arizona and will play for the Wildcats this fall.
Gumberg birdied five of his last six holes on the back nine to post 30 and grab the first round lead, while Armstrong, a freshman at Lipscomb University, carded a 65 at the longer Geronimo Course.
The field of 156 high-caliber amateurs of this 72-hole stroke play event will be cut down to the top-60 players after 36 holes, and the remainder of the field will play the final two rounds on the Geronimo Course. Both tracks are Jack Nicklaus Signature courses, with the Cochise once playing host to the Traditions Championship and is the current site of the Charles Schwab Cup, the season-ending event on the Champions Tour.
Geronimo was the tougher task on day one as shown by a stroke average of 74.88 compared to 73.04 on Cochise.
Twenty-four players are under par after the first round, with both courses playing to a par-70. The Geronimo Course is tipped out at 7,219 yards while the Cochise course sits just under 7,000 at 6,889.
Three players are tied for sixth place at 66, including future Stanford golfer Brandon Wu, soon-to-be Colorado State freshman Jake Staiano, and recent Cal State-San Marcos transfer Dylan Healey.
