The only player to break par on Sunday

SAN JOSE, Calif. Jan. 21, 2007-- Cold weather and high winds knocked the scores down a peg in the amateurgolf.com Silicon Valley Amateur at the Coyote Creek Golf Club, but when the dust had settled, it was Randy Haag taking the victory with a six-foot par putt on the first playoff hole.

Haag pegged the winds at 30-40 mph, perfect conditions for him to mount a challenge on the leaders.

"When you are four shots of the lead, that's what you look for to get a chance to get back in it," he said. "I've played a lot of golf in Scotland and Britain where you have to deal with the wind, it's actually a lot of fun, a whole different game."

"It was a long, hard-fought round both mentally and physically," Haag continued. "You had to keep the ball down obviously because any small mistake is exacerbated. It's a great challenge and a side of golf we don't see that often."

Haag held off Taylor Travis, who sat second on the leaderboard to start the day, by stringing together a row of birdies for a 35 on the front nine. The pair finished with two-day totals of 144.

Topper Owen had a "crazy round" by his account in the senior flight, mixing in six birdies with four double bogeys and coming out with a 76. That score, combined with his opening day 73, was three strokes better than his nearest competitor.

"It was very cold and very windy out there from the begining, I'd guess the wind was about 20-25 mph," said Owen. "I'm old, like we all are, and I'd had some previous experience playing in those conditions. If you are new to it, it's almost hopeless."

In the net division, James Grensted was solid through two days, posting 73-75 to top Waiter Harris by two shots.
